Windows Vista Beta 2

Ok, for those of you that are interested I am going to post a screenshot from the Vista Beta 2 that I am messing around with and give you my brief thoughts on it. Many Mac lovers will say, "Mac already has that" for just about everything.... but I don't care who had it first, so no comments of that nature please.

First off, I like it. It has a great look (despite the system hog that it is, I'll mention that later). The fogged glass is very nice touch, at least for microsoft. The window animations are clean and brief and the new alt+tab rocks. You get live thumbnails of all your pages, not only with alt+tab but if you mouse over the buttons in the task bar you get the same effect.

The new file browsing made me cry for joy. As you can see in the screen shot you can not only jump to any parent folder, but to any child folder of any parent folder. This is obviously Windows response to Apples column browsing, and I think that it kicks column browsings butt. (I have been using OSX at work for a month now, and the column thing just doesn't do it for me)

Obviously, explorer couldn't put off the public any longer and finally added tab browsing, yeah for them. Also drawing from public demand they have native widgets as you can see in the images right hand side. These are detachable as well.

Over all it has been very stable. No freezes or crashes, which isn't bad for a beta. Also they have a link that you can send suggestions on improvements. (Hopefully they read them) They also have a new "sleep" mode that pretty much shuts your computer down, but only takes 4-6 seconds to start up. Very handy.

The bad news, it eats up your RAM and if you want to have the graphics at max (glass, fog and animation) you have to have a mid level machine. Also I installed the 64 bit version but I haven't been able to do any preformance tests.

There is a lot more than what is here, but I can't type that much. Enjoy the pic and ask questions if you have them.

I've been keeping an eye on Vista for awhile now. It does seem like it'll be pretty sweet, although a part of my hates knowing that each new OS (whether on Mac or PC) requires more resources than the previous. 'Cause, I mean, you know if you were running Win98 on your current computer, you could really shut it all the way down and boot it back up in about 10 seconds.

Also, tabbed browsing for IE is almost too little too late. They lost an awful lot of mindshare. The only reason the current statistics aren't more scary for Microsoft is because so many people will always continue to use whatever browser Windows spoonfeeds them. But for those who understand the concept of different web browsers, Firefox is running away with the prize. On the PureVideoGames.net forums, the majority of our hits come from Firefox.

...and now about the review: It's good reading a review from someone that actually USES their computer (as opposed to someone that just works on one).

Personally, I'm still skeptical about Vista. The earliest press releases from MS said Vista would be based on a new file system that was database-driven instead of FAT-driven. This would have made the system many times faster, simply by design, making many of the new hardware-intensive things forgivable. However, M$, in it's infinite wisdom scrapped the idea because the new file system couldn't be finished to meet their 5-years-between-releases goal. Ever since they scrapped that idea, I've had it in my mind that Vista would essentially be just another "skin" for Win 2k--like XP is.

Honestly, I still haven't read anything to make me think of it as anything else but a new skin, but I'm glad to hear from other power-users that it's a good looking skin, albeit a hardware-intensive one :)

Wow. Dustin this is really awful. Your lack of posting is almost embarrassing. I mean one can understand a week, maybe 2, but almost 3 weeks? That is just pathetic. And not in the good way that Jesse likes to use it.
